workbench drawer plans
A while ago I started a project I desperately needed but was getting by with using other means. I had read through Jim Tolpins book "The New Traditional Woodworker" and one of the shop projects were a set of saw benches. He uses them in his book quite a bit and in a pinch these can even be used as a workbench for you. Jim is a wooden boat builder as well as a woodworker and through the book you will see different woodworking techniques used. He likes to use other fasteners that I had no experience with and was intrigued to learn. I started to make these saw benches but I just kept putting it off doing other things, other projects and just getting by using my work bench and or a workmate. I was going to make 2 of these and use them as a system like Jim does in the book. Jim does not give you any real measurements to go by just a brief description and pictures of them in action. The cut list was non existent. The angles the same. The instructions just said make a full size drawing and get the angles off of that. Then I completed my first one and learned a few new things. Even though this is one of the first projects a woodworker should make for themselves there are some techniques to learn. These saw benches can be made rather quickly with a skill saw and screws or nails but take your time and use a new to you technique. Use them as a learning project. Make them with hand tools and you will be more than satisfied.
First thing to do is figure out what type of wood you are going to use and where they will be used, indoor, outdoor or a combination of the two. I used big store construction grade lumber for these 2 but try hardwoods for a fancy pair or try recycled lumber. Instead of screws use pegs, square nails, or copper roves. Experiment with what you like but please do yourself a favor and make a pair. I started off breaking down the stock. I made these saw benches 4 feet long but Jim writes 3 to 4 feet long so make them what ever size you like. This being my second bench I will experiment with different fasteners like copper roves, nails and maybe keyed pegs. The height of the benches will be to the top of your knee cap so cut the straight legs accordingly. I found the angled legs to be 1 inch longer but your front drawing will tell you what to do. So first off buy some lumber, I used 2x6s for the legs, top and front gussets and 2x4s for the leg and top brace but what you use is up to you. Now make some measurements and get started breaking down the stock. You can build 2 at a time or do what I did build one first and then use it to build the second one. Here is a link on Google Books to the preview edition of the book and on page 165 are the plans for these saw benches(New Traditional Woodworker) Also the projects in this book can be used as a prerequisite to taking some more advanced classes up where Jim teaches at The Port Townsend School of Woodworking
The hold fast feature works like an extra set of hands.
Using my saw bench to build its twin.
Stock broken down, joinery next time.
