The next step was to lay out a full size plan and get the angles and length of the angled legs. Then I cut out shallow mortises for the legs in the top and notched the legs. Since my legs are 1 1/2 inches thick I made the mortises 3/4 of an inch and notched the straight legs the same. The angled legs you will have to determine from your drawings. If you are interested in my dimensions please leave me a comment or email me. I next made a tool called a sticking board used to make dowels from square stock in order to make pegs from scratch. I previously just bought hardwood dowels for the one in the picture but for this bench I wanted to make my own. This sticking board tool is simple to make and is in Jims book as well.

Full size of front view.

Laying out mortises

Making the knife line/pencil line more defined using a chisel

Sawing the waste

Chiseling out the waste. Direction is important.

Clean up mortise with a sharp chisel.

Making larger saw cuts speeds things up but be careful here.

Mortises complete on top. All the straight legs will have straight notches, all the angled legs will have angled notches.

Layout for notches on legs.

Sawing notches is a good learning experience for re-sawing wood to make a matched bookend pair of boards.

Notches done.

Angled notches layout.

Saw the angled notches similar to how the straight ones were done.

Angled notches done.

Make a sticking board for creating dowels if you are so inclined else go out and purchase some hardwood dowels. You can use nails, screws lags etc. Why not try cut nails?

This plane made a slightly larger groove than was called for, 1/4 was called for 3/8 is what I did.

Flat head screw as a stop.

Plane the dowels into a hex by shaving off the corners. Jim says this is fine for pegs I went a bit further.

Pegs done.

Glue up of legs next time.
